Vamatara – To the Light Choreographed and conceptualised by Malavika Sarukkai is a celebration of the concept of the lotus in Hinduism. This motif recurs in Indian thought and representation through the centuries be it in architecture, sculpture, painting, dance, poetry. The lotus motif resonates encompassing the arc from the worldly to the spiritual.
Through the visual unfolding of dance in Vamatara- To The Light, the lotus is seen as figurative design in art, ideal and symbol of awakening in philosophy and metaphor of existence. Though rooted in slush, the lotus stem rises towards the light, its bloom blossoming to the rays of the sun, in a call for hope.
